SHASTA COUNTY
Redding: Went back to the pond at Turtle Bay and saw an additional species of dragonfly, an all red one which I believe was a Cardinal Meadowhawk (Sympetrum illotum). Further examination of the blue ones didn't help a lot. I got a look at the "face" of one - it had a cream-colored rectangle on an otherwise dark head. Eyes were very green. Thorax in front of the wings was blue like the rest of the body. This fits the pondhawk better, but the fact that all the ones I've seen sitting were on vegetation up above the water, and that the wings are held well forward, and that the face is more white than green all point toward the dasher! [sounds like a Dasher to me - kb]

Wilson Lake: excerpt from my journal - "hundreds of dragonflies. With Tim Manolis's help I've identified these as Twelve-spotted Skimmer (Libellula pulchella), Dot-tailed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia intacta), Chalk-fronted Corporal (Libellula julia), and Four-spotted Skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata). I also saw an olive and red one that Tim couldn't figure out, but thought might be a "teneral" (recently-emerged adult) of one of the white-faces; one I thought was a Black Saddlebags because I had described one to Ron LeValley and that's what he thought it was, but I now know was a male Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa); and lots of large, Bluet-type damselflies. I saw one of the whitefaces catch and eat one of these."
---
My yard on Live Oak Road, 8 mi W of Red Bluff: I identified Widow Skimmer and Common Whitetail (Libellula lydia). Dragonflies are attracted to our property because of the pool, I think, because that's the only way I see them, coursing around over it.
